Mod Valheim with AI: a Frostner-to-Mjolnir rework

This Valheim AI mod guide covers one contributor report, not a “best Valheim mods” list. The note marks a Frostner-to-Mjolnir rework working: secondary attack throws the hammer; aiming at it and pressing secondary attack again recalls it, turns it handle-first and equips it. The credited agent is OpenCode with DeepSeek. Source: Mjolnir field note.
Reported setup and modding route
The contributor used Valheim l-1.0.16, Steam build 25527674, with Unity 6000.0.75f1, Mono, on native Linux / Steam Deck. The documented loader is BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351, with Jotunn 2.30.2. The plugin targets net472, built with the .NET SDK 8 and framework reference assemblies. These are the report’s versions, not requirements claimed for every Valheim install. Source: setup.
The managed-patch route uses BepInEx, Jotunn and Harmony to alter the existing prefab MaceSilver, rather than creating another item. Jotunn’s vanilla-prefab event supplies the point at which to change it. In this game version, the main game code resides in assembly_valheim.dll; the note says Assembly-CSharp.dll is nearly empty. Source: route and build context.
What the contributor verified
Hand-played sessions and the plugin’s own log tracked the full throw, deployment, recall, catch, inventory return and equip chain across dozens of cycles. Walking recalls, early grabs near the hammer and preserving the kick when aiming away were checked. A full inventory drops the returned item at the player’s feet; a projectile timeout drops it safely. These are contributor observations, not our tests. Source: verification.
Recall and equipment gotchas
Duplicated item on the ground
The note traces duplication to patching projectile setup too late: a postfix runs after the game has stored the item for a drop-on-hit clone. Its fix is a prefix that clears the respawn/drop state before the original setup runs. Source: duplication gotcha.
The kick eats the recall
Empty hands still resolve to the game’s unarmed weapon. A check only for a null weapon misses that case. The reported fix intercepts secondary attack early and tests for the unarmed weapon too, while preserving the kick when the player is not aiming at the hammer. Source: unarmed and recall gotcha.
Auto-equip silently fails
A catch animation left the player in an attacking state, which made equipment refuse the returned hammer. The contributor replaced the attack gesture with interact, checked the equip result and retried when needed. Source: equip gotcha.
The note also moves the cloned attack’s dramatic launch effects to the impact rather than retaining the large launch wave. Its build and launch commands are not reproduced here: this page explains the report, while installation supplies the documented Universal Modder setup. Source: remaining gotchas.
How to start your own Valheim mod
Use the item/weapon prompt template with your installed game version and an existing item to rework. Ask for single-player only, back up saves, and prove one small slice before expanding. The project’s workflow puts backups and a working slice before larger changes. Source: mod-any-game workflow.
Follow Install Universal Modder, compare routes in how to merge two games with AI, browse all prompt templates and use troubleshooting if setup fails. Keep game assets local: the project’s contribution policy excludes redistributed game files and ripped assets. Source: contribution policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a list of the best Valheim mods?
No. This guide explains one contributor's working Frostner rework and what an AI-assisted modding session learned. It is not a mod ranking or a general compatibility list.
Does the report add a new weapon?
It changes the existing Frostner prefab, internally named MaceSilver. The report says existing and newly crafted Frostners gain the throw and recall behaviour.
Was this tested on Steam Deck?
The contributor reports real-game testing on a native-Linux Steam Deck install, over dozens of throw and recall cycles. That is evidence for the reported setup, not a promise about other versions; we have not tested it ourselves.
What should my first prompt ask for?
Adapt the item or weapon template in our prompt library. Specify your installed version, single-player use, save backups and one small slice before asking for a full weapon rework.
