SkyCraft mod: Minecraft in Skyrim
Last updated: · By Jin Song
SkyCraft is a separate project without a game entry in this index. See the Minecraft field notes in the lookup tool →
What SkyCraft is
SkyCraft puts a Minecraft player into Skyrim: Minecraft supplies movement, inventory and the HUD while Skyrim supplies its world, NPCs, quests and saves. An SKSE plugin and a Fabric mod exchange data through shared memory. Minecraft runs hidden; Skyrim renders the combined view. Source: SkyCraft README.
The README calls it early and experimental. Back up saves before trying it. You must own both games. This fan project has no affiliation with Mojang, Microsoft, Bethesda or ZeniMax. Source: README.
SkyCraft is a separate MIT project from Universal Modder. Its README does not claim it was built with Universal Modder. This guide focuses on an owned single-player setup; the separate friends section below summarizes only SkyCraft’s documented networking. Sources: SkyCraft license notice and Universal Modder README.
What works
The README reports the following capabilities; these are project claims, not tests by this site:
- Minecraft walking, sprinting, jumping, crouching, swimming and falling use Skyrim terrain collision.
- Placed blocks receive Skyrim lighting, shadows, fog and weather; Minecraft light sources illuminate Skyrim. Block entities render and pistons move blocks.
- Mining removes Skyrim ground and objects, drops blocks and creates holes that affect players, NPCs and items. Explosions create craters. Dug terrain is saved in the Minecraft world; the pause menu’s Skyrim destruction: On/Off stops further destruction but preserves existing holes.
- Water and lava flow across terrain. NPCs respond to Minecraft weapons, fire, lava, pressure plates and block collision, with weapon damage scaled to NPC level.
- Minecraft actions train Skyrim weapon, armor, Block, Smithing and Sneak skills.
- Minecraft camera modes show the player’s skin and armor; death uses a Skyrim camera and ragdoll. Skyrim temporarily controls its own furniture, crafting, horse and scripted animations.
Requirements
Skyrim
Use Skyrim Special Edition with the Anniversary Edition runtime (1.6.x / 1.7.x). The README records development and testing on 1.7.104 and excludes SE 1.5.97 and VR. Install SKSE64 for your game version and the Address Library for SKSE Plugins file named All in one (Anniversary Edition). Source: README requirements.
The README strongly recommends Alternate Start - Live Another Life, because the cart ride and Helgen opening can get stuck. The stated alternative is a save made after Helgen. Source: README requirements.
Minecraft
You need a Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java Edition. A portable Prism Launcher is configured for Minecraft 26.3, Fabric, Fabric API and the SkyCraft Minecraft mod; Prism downloads Minecraft and Java after sign-in. The README budgets about 3 GB of extra RAM and 1.5 GB of disk for Minecraft files, plus a GPU that runs Minecraft 26.3. Source: README requirements.
The package does not include Minecraft, Java, Fabric Loader, Skyrim, SKSE or the Address Library. The third-party notice distinguishes packaged components from the downloads Prism performs. Source: THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md.
Installing and official downloads
Download only from the official chasmlol/SkyCraft GitHub releases page. The latest release in the 2026-10-09 snapshot is v0.1.2, with these assets:
| Asset | Role |
|---|---|
SkyCraft-0.1.2.zip |
The mod package to install |
skycraft-fabric-0.1.2.jar |
Minecraft-side mod for an own-launcher setup |
SkyCraft-0.1.2-pdb.zip |
Debug symbols for crash logs; most users do not need them |
- Install
SkyCraft-<version>.zipwith Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex, as an SKSE plugin. - Start Skyrim through SKSE. On first launch, SkyCraft unpacks to
%LOCALAPPDATA%\SkyCraft. Alt-Tab to Prism Launcher, sign in with the owning Microsoft account, then return to Skyrim. Prism downloads Minecraft, Fabric and Java; corner messages indicate readiness. - Later starts are automatic: hidden, silent Minecraft starts with Skyrim and opens the local SkyCraft Survival world. It exits when Skyrim closes.
Updating: install the new zip over the existing mod. The next launch updates the Minecraft side and keeps the sign-in and world. Uninstalling: remove the mod, then delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\SkyCraft; this folder contains Prism, its Microsoft sign-in, Minecraft files and the SkyCraft world. Back up saves before making changes to this experimental setup. Source: README.
Using your own launcher
The optional configuration at Data/SKSE/Plugins/SkyCraft.ini can select your own Prism, MultiMC or .bat launcher. The README’s configuration is reproduced verbatim:
[Minecraft]
bStartWithSkyrim = 1 ; 0: start Minecraft yourself, any way you like
sLauncher = ; empty: the Minecraft that comes with SkyCraft
sArguments = --launch SkyCraft ; what your launcher needs to start the SkyCraft instance
That instance needs Minecraft 26.3, Fabric Loader 0.19.5 or newer, Fabric API, Java 25 and skycraft-fabric-<version>.jar. To start hidden, the README specifies -Dskycraft.startHidden=true in JVM arguments. It will not start another Minecraft if a modded instance is already running. The launcher uses Windows’ shell and stays outside Mod Organizer’s virtual file system. Source: README, Using your own launcher.
Controls
Minecraft receives most keys. The following exceptions go to Skyrim, with Esc also able to close a Minecraft screen:
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| G | Activate doors, NPC conversations, containers, levers and furniture |
| Esc | Skyrim menu or close a Minecraft screen |
| J / M | Skyrim journal / map |
| H | Skyrim wait |
| F9 | Skyrim quickload; save through the Esc menu |
| ~ | Skyrim console |
| O | Minecraft pause / options |
Minecraft uses E for inventory, F5 for camera, T for chat, / for commands and Shift for crouching/sneaking. Source: README Controls.
Playing with friends
The README describes sharing only the Minecraft world: blocks, items, mobs and players. It states up to 100 players, each with their own Skyrim and SkyCraft. Each person’s Skyrim world, NPCs and quests stay separate; guests cannot hit their own Skyrim NPCs yet. Source: README.
The host presses O, selects Open to LAN, then Start LAN World. Bundled e4mc places a link in chat to copy and share. Friends press T and enter /join abc-def.e4mc.link, using the host’s link. /leave returns to their own world; host disconnection also returns them automatically. The README also describes a Join button on Discord status after opening to LAN, for friends already running Skyrim and SkyCraft. These are the README’s instructions; this guide adds no networking advice. Source: README Playing with friends.
Known limitations
The README’s diagnostic log is Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\SKSE\SkyCraft.log; bDiagnostics = 1 in SkyCraft.ini enables detailed logging. If startup remains stuck, the message after a minute distinguishes a busy Prism Launcher, a closed Minecraft, or an unresponsive Minecraft. Alt-Tab to check Prism; the Minecraft log is %LOCALAPPDATA%\SkyCraft\Prism\instances\SkyCraft\.minecraft\logs\latest.log. The README asks for both logs when reporting an unresponsive instance. Source: README Known limitations.
Skyrim inventory, magic, shouts and perks are unavailable while Minecraft controls the player. Minecraft hits reach Skyrim NPCs but not objects such as Arvel’s web. There is no in-game switch to ordinary Skyrim: the documented workaround closes Minecraft, handles the object, then restarts Skyrim; Minecraft retains its last periodic autosave. Source: README Known limitations.
Sign text is not rendered. All Skyrim interiors use one Minecraft world, so interior blocks can overlap at matching coordinates. Camera takeover mods Improved Camera SE, SmoothCam and True Directional Movement conflict. The scripted opening and Minecraft-only synchronization limits still apply. Source: README Known limitations.
Reported problems
As of the 2026-10-09 snapshot, maintainer chasmlol has not replied to any of the 39 supplied issues. The last project update recorded in the snapshot was 2026-10-01. The reports below describe users’ setups and suggestions, not official fixes or independently verified solutions. Sources: issue archive and repository.
Game crashes on New game or Load game
Issue #27 includes crash and launch logs; another commenter reports a new-game crash. A user, ProtozomiVR, suggested starting a new game, saving once in the cell, then opening SkyCraft, and reported that this worked for them. The earlier “solved” comment gives no procedure. Source: issue #27.
Skyrim works fine, Minecraft crashes directly after joining the world.
The user in #31 reports Minecraft closing after joining. Their log says Skyrim has closed and Minecraft is saving and quitting; this is an observation, not proof of the underlying cause. No workaround is supplied in that issue. Source: issue #31.
Minecraft just close
The #35 reporter says Minecraft opens, loads briefly and disappears from Task Manager. The log records saving and quitting after Skyrim is reported closed, with exit code 0. The only comment supplies no workaround. Source: issue #35.
Linux/Proton: plugin load dies inside std::format
The #37 reporter attributes an empty SkyCraft log and plugin-load failure to a stale MSVC runtime, and reports loading successfully after updating it. A commenter, moshi630, suggested Proton 10.0-4 for their injection hang and a 14.50 or newer VC++ runtime; they report success with 14.51, while 14.44 failed. These are different users’ environment-specific findings, not official Linux support or a universal fix. Source: issue #37 and comment.
Unpacking failed error on linux
In #30, Skyrim starts under Proton but the Minecraft bundle does not unpack; manual extraction did not resolve it for the reporter. A user, TTRaven, suggested placing a Windows bsdtar executable as tar.exe in the prefix’s system32 directory, then removing the local SkyCraft folder to retry, and reports success. Removing that folder also removes the stored world and sign-in described in the README, so preserve backups. Issue #37 independently reports a missing system32\tar.exe and a commenter reports progressing through Prism downloads with it present. These are user workarounds. Sources: issue #30, issue #37 and README folder contents.
Camera gets stuck randomly, unable to move up or down.
The #32 reporter says vertical camera movement stops while left/right movement works. The reporter says quicksaving then quickloading restores movement temporarily; there are no comments with another workaround. Source: issue #32.
Invert mouse Y/X not working
The #23 reporter says enabling invert mouse has no effect. No workaround is documented in that issue. Source: issue #23.
Minecraft view: Unlock FPS(or at least above 30)
The #18 reporter sees Minecraft capped at 30 FPS even with its limit set to Unlimited. A user, Reznov-Swing, suggested adjusting Skyrim’s SSE Display Tweaks frame limit, claiming Minecraft follows Skyrim’s frame rate in this bridge. The same commenter also discusses balancing the games’ limits, VSync and driver frame generation; these are user suggestions, not established causes or guaranteed performance improvements. Source: issue #18 and comments.
Skyrim Crashes when Closed thru Taskbar
Issue #40 reports a crash during taskbar closure. The author suspects mesh-reference cleanup during DLL unload and proposes code changes, but does not supply a verified end-user workaround. They also note use of a custom loader rather than SKSE. Source: issue #40.
Void Damage Problem (At y=-120+ after)
The #42 reporter asks to remove low-altitude void damage. A user, SimpleCodeStudio, says they made a separate “No Void Damage” mod. This is an unverified third-party workaround claim; this guide provides no download link or endorsement. Source: issue #42 and comment.
Dark, flickering or frozen view
Issue #16 reports a frozen dark frame despite removing administrator privileges; #19 attributes a black screen to failed overlay-texture creation. These user findings do not establish a single root cause. A user, TheMan8116, in #15 suggested signing into the Prism instance again and avoiding administrator mode. That suggestion is not confirmed for #16 or #19, and neither of those issues records a fix. Sources: issue #15, issue #16 and issue #19.
